  1. Masked Booby- at least three feeding offshore at Ras Kutani 
  2. Long-tailed Cormorant- three at Chole, one in lagoon at Ras Kutani
  3. Black-crowned Night-Heron- a remarkable tally of three in the heron roost at Chole
  4. Cattle Egret- dozens on Mafia and one on Chole
  5. Green-backed Heron- dozens at Chole, one at Ras Kutani
  6. Dimorphic Egret- many dozens in roost at Chole
  7. Black Egret- two at Chole
  8. Black-headed Heron- three on the airstrip at Dar es Salaam
  9. Grey Heron- several at Chole
  10. Hamerkop- one at Ras Kutani
  11. Yellow-billed Kite- one at Dar es Salaam, several on Mafia and at Ras Kutani
  12. Black Kite- only one definite of this palearctic migrant- seen on the beach at Ras Kutani
  13. African Fish Eagle- several very well at both Chole and Ras Kutani
  14. Osprey- one seen at Chole on the beach and flying over
  15. Palm-nut Vulture- two over Mafia and seen very well at Ras Kutani everyday
  16. African Hawk-Eagle- one over Ras Kutani
  17. Gabar Goshawk- one at Ras Kutani, flushed by Ring-necked Doves
  18. Common Kestrel- 7 at Dar es Salaam airstrip
  19. Crab-plover- just seen once- a flock of C.25 on Mafia Island
  20. Water Dikkop- two seen once on Chole
  21. White-fronted Plover- one among plover flock at Ras Kutani
  22. Ringed Plover- about 8 at Chole and 5 at Ras Kutani
  23. Lesser Sandplover- 6 at Ras Kutani
  24. Greater Sandplover- at least 12 at Ras Kutani
  25. Grey Plover- at least 10 at Chole, 5 at Ras Kutani
  26. Common Sandpiper- about 15 at Chole, two in lagoon at Ras Kutani
  27. Greenshank- ten at Chole, one on Mafia
  28. Little Stint- one with Sanderlings at Ras Kutani
  29. Sanderling- a group of C.20 seen regularly at Ras Kutani
  30. Turnstone- one with Sanderlings at Ras Kutani
  31. Curlew Sandpiper- three on sandbank in Chole Bay
  32. Curlew- one on sandbank in Chole Bay
  33. Whimbrel- abundant at Chole- present in their hundreds, about 10 at Ras Kutani
  34. Greater Crested Tern- C.15 seen off Mafia, five seen flying past Chole and three at Ras Kutani
  35. Lesser Crested Tern- 3 seen off Mafia
  36. Saunder's Tern- five off Mafia and one over the beach at Ras Kutani
  37. Green Pigeon- a single bird and a group of 9 at Chole
  38. Feral Pigeon- several at Dar es Salaam and 6 on Chole
  39. Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove- common around Chole and two at Ras Kutani
  40. Tambourine Dove- one at Chole
  41. Ring-necked Dove- very common at Ras Kutani
  42. Red-eyed Dove- very common at Chole
  43. Laughing Dove- several seen at Chole
  44. Diederik Cuckoo- single birds seen twice at Chole
  45. Palm Swift- very common in the palm plantations on Chole
  46. Eurasian Swift- several at Ras Kutani feeding over the lagoon
  47. Pied Kingfisher- a pair seen twice at Chole, at least five in the lagoon at Ras Kutani
  48. Giant Kingfisher- a single bird seen twice in the lagoon at Ras Kutani
  49. Mangrove Kingfisher- singles seen regularly at Chole and a pair seen once
  50. Malachite Kingfisher- one in the lagoon at Ras Kutani
  51. White-throated Bee-eater- a group of 10 at Ras Kutani
  52. Blue-cheeked Bee-eater- common in the palms on Chole and a group of six at Ras Kutani
  53. Broad-billed Roller- seen twice on Mafia
  54. Lilac-breasted Roller- common on Mafia
  55. Lesser Striped Swallow- common over the lagoon at Ras Kutani
  56. Wire-tailed Swallow- one at Chole, common at Ras Kutani
  57. Barn Swallow- several at Ras Kutani
  58. Common Bulbul- very common at Chole and Ras Kutani
  59. (Zanzibar) Sombre Greenbul- one at Chole
  60. Red-capped Robin-Chat- at least two on Chole
  61. Green-backed Camaroptera- two on Chole
  62. Spotted Flycatcher- very common on Chole
  63. Paradise Flycatcher- two on Chole
  64. Amethyst Sunbird- common on Chole
  65. Olive Sunbird- seen regularly on Chole
  66. Purple-banded Sunbird- one on Chole
  67. Collared Sunbird- abundant on Chole, five at Ras Kutani
  68. Black-backed Puffback- common on Chole
  69. House Crow- abundant in Dar es Salaam and on Mafia- strangely absent from Chole
  70. Pied Crow- common everywhere we went
  71. Black-bellied Starling- common on Chole, a flock of 6 at Ras Kutani
  72. House Sparrow- very common in Dar es Salaam
  73. Southern Grey-headed Sparrow- common on Chole
  74. Black-headed Weaver- very common on Chole
  75. African Golden Weaver- very common on Chole
  76. Fan-tailed Widowbird- one on Mafia
  77. Black-winged Red Bishop- male and female in reedbed at Ras Kutani
  78. Bronze Mannikin- large flocks on Chole and at Ras Kutani
  79. Red-billed Firefinch- a group of 6 at Ras Kutani
  80. Pin-tailed Whydah- a female at Ras Kutani
